Samuel Corban
Requested of God. Dedicated to God.
Corban Is Home.
MEET CORBAN BIXBY"Samuel" means "requested of God," and "Corban" means "a gift devoted to God." Bob and Jennie chose this name long ago. They have been waiting upon the Lord for a long time concerning a second adoption, and they learned about this opportunity just before Thanksgiving. A healthy baby boy, Corban was born on January 9th, 2007! The Bixbys were able to meet him in person the very next day, and they left the hospital together as a family of four. His adoption was approved by a South Carolina judge and later was finalized in an Illinois court on February 27, 2007.
MEET CORBAN'S PARENTS
Bob and Jennie Bixby live in Rockford, Illinois, where Bob pastors Morning Star Baptist Church. The Bixbys served as missionaries for over ten years in France and Belgium before moving to the USA in 2002. God providentially arranged an adoption for their first child, a daughter named Patience (because He gave her to them after ten years of waiting and praying). Patience turned six years old in March, and she has been praying for a little brother like Corban for a long time. You can learn more about the Bixbys at their online adoption journal, REQUESTED OF GOD.
In their own words, here is a little more of the Bixbys' story: Children are a gift from the Lord. Perhaps it is normal to take for granted how significant the sovereignty of God is in these matters, but that consideration has been forced upon us. We are completely subjected to sovereignty because we are utterly powerless. We cannot manipulate, we cannot scheme, we cannot "reasonably plan." We cannot even say, "If the Lord wills, this is what we will do."
So we just delight in what God has given us and tell Him what we would like. For years now we have been content. We arrived at contentment before Patience was given to us and we have been content with only her. "Content" almost sounds like we settled with it. On the contrary, we have always felt ourselves to be over-blessed.
But, interestingly, when God grants His children the joy of being over-blessed, He also gives us desires. Certainly "mercy drops 'round us are falling, but for the showers we plead." So, we have requested of God. Samuel either means "requested of God" or "God heard/hears." Either way, the point is that we have a God to whom we can pray. We have a God that can be petitioned.
Corban means "a gift dedicated to God." Our cups overflow. The Lord is gracious to us. What we get is what we can give. And if the Lord gives us another child, that child will be dedicated to God even as our first is. So we have liked the name Corban for a long, long time.
With the addition of little Corban, the Bixbys have become a multiracial family, and they are exulting in the way God has exhibited His grace. They are not perfect people, and they would not claim to be perfect parents. But the Bixbys believe this opportunity was God's answer to their prayers for another child. Not only is it their desire to bring Corban up in a loving, healthy, two-parent home, but they have committed themselves to teaching him about the one true God Who adopts sinners into His own household, both for His glory and their good.
CONTACT HANNAH'S HEART
Hannah's Heart is the brainchild and burden of the single adults fellowship in Morning Star Baptist Church in Rockford, Illinois. It is yet another project-in-progress of Global Grace Missions, Morning Star's disaster relief and missions arm. Although Hannah's Heart has already helped facilitate donations for a couple of other families, when the fund was started, the Bixbys were the first candidates we had in mind. You can learn more about the beginnings and motives of Hannah's Heart here.
